“I did not think my heart could break like it has this week,” Jinger Duggar said

Jinger Duggar is speaking out after her brother Joseph Duggar and sister-in-law Kendra Duggar’s arrests.

Jinger and her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, released a short episode of their podcast, Jinger & Jeremy, on March 25 to address Joseph’s March 18 arrest.

Joseph, 31, was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim less than 12 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older, Florida’s Bay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The arrest was in connection to a child sexual abuse case involving a then-9-year-old girl who was on vacation with her family in Panama City Beach, Fla., in 2020.

Two days later, Kendra, 27, was also arrested. A spokesperson for the family said the charges filed against Kendra are “totally unrelated” to the felony charges her husband is expected to face in Florida. “She’s not suspected or accused of participating in his alleged crime,” the spokesperson said.

She and Joseph are both facing four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree, and four counts of false imprisonment in the second degree, according to Arkansas’ Tontitown Police Department.

On the podcast episode, Jinger, 32, said it “has been such a long week” and has “been one of those weeks that feels like years.”

“I did not think my heart could break like it has this week,” she said. “The pain and heartbreak that we’ve had over this and just thinking of how it’s affected so many — yeah, it’s just unthinkable. It’s so hard and painful on many levels.”

Jeremy, 38, said the news of the arrests was “devastating to hear,” and he and his wife had a “difficult week” as they tried to “think through and pray through this.”

“Thinking about the victim who was brave enough to share her story has been heartbreaking,” Jeremy said. “Just the effect on that young person’s life is unimaginable. And then to see the ripple effect of that horrific crime, just across the board, it just has so many damaging, rippling effects.

I think that’s been, for me, the forefront of my mind, is just thinking — the horror of a crime like that affecting so many for so many years. It’s devastating to think about.”

Jinger said she doesn’t “even have words” to describe how she feels in the wake of the news, but she also reflected on her family’s history with legal trouble.

Josh, 38, was convicted of receiving and possessing material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, also known as child sexual abuse material, in 2021. He was also accused of sexually abusing five girls, including his sisters Jill and Jessa.

“You can’t be prepared for news like this, even though we’ve experienced something very similar before, with one of my other siblings, who made unthinkable choices, decisions that have affected all of us,” Jinger said on the podcast.

“And yet the pain and hurt that’s caused to us, but then to so many others, is just so hard. It’s hard to know what to do sometimes, moving forward. You just feel the weight of it.”

Jeremy said he and his wife, who share three kids, are “just feeling helpless.”

The alleged abuse that led to Joseph’s arrest on molestation charges occurred after he asked the victim to sit on his lap, per the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. “As the vacation continued, he also asked her to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket.

During this time, Duggar manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals. Duggar would also continue to rub his hands on her thighs,” BCSO said.

“The victim stated Duggar eventually apologized for his actions and the incidents stopped after the apology,” BCSO added.

Duggar’s arrest comes after the now-14-year-old victim participated in a forensic interview regarding a report of past sexual abuse. Her father confronted Duggar about the incidents and he “allegedly admitted his actions to the father and Tontitown detectives.”

In the wake of Joseph and Kendra’s arrests, several other Duggar family members have expressed their shock and sorrow, including cousin Amy Duggar King, who said in a statement she was “sickened, heartbroken and deeply angry” after Joseph was arrested.

“My first thoughts are with the victim, a child who deserved to be safe, protected and surrounded by people she could trust. The courage it took for her to come forward, especially after years of carrying something so heavy, cannot be overstated,” Amy said.

She said she was “utterly shocked to hear about these allegations and Joseph’s arrest,” but “at the same time I am not surprised that another alleged predator has emerged from this toxic system.”
